The Controller supports the financial operations of the organization and ensures accurate, timely, and compliant accounting and reporting across multiple entities. Reporting to the VP, Finance & Operations, this hands-on role manages day-to-day accounting functions, oversees an Accounting Clerk, and prepares consolidated financial statements and management reports for executive review.

The ideal candidate brings accounting and reporting experience from a financial services or investment management environment, with a strong technical foundation in IFRS reporting, experience with integrating new entities, and the ability to convert financial statements from cash or PE GAAP to IFRS and accrual basis. The role also requires the ability to manage accounting in a multi-entity, multi-currency environment, with strong attention to detail and adaptability in a fast-paced, evolving business setting.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting
•       Oversee full-cycle accounting for multiple entities, including journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end and year-end closing processes.
•       Prepare timely consolidated monthly financial statements, management reports, and supporting schedules for review by the VP, Finance & Operations.
•       Ensure accurate accounting records and reporting align with IFRS and company policies.
•       Assist in the preparation of annual budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses.
•       Support the VP, Finance & Operations in financial modeling, cash flow projections, and performance analysis.
•       Maintain accurate financial records across multiple currencies, ensuring appropriate conversion and consolidation adjustments.
•       Support accurate accounting for investment-related transactions and regulatory reporting requirements specific to portfolio management and advisory operations.

Entity Integration & Conversion
•       Support the integration of new entities into the company’s accounting and reporting framework.
•       Manage or assist in the conversion of financial statements from cash basis or PE GAAP to IFRS and accrual basis, ensuring consistency and accuracy across all entities.
•       Customize checklists, documentation, and reconciliation processes to fit the specific needs of each entity integration or accounting standard conversion.
•       Coordinate with external advisors and auditors to validate conversion adjustments and ensure compliance with IFRS disclosure requirements.

Team Leadership & Staff Oversight
•       Supervise and mentor the Accounting Clerk, ensuring timely completion of AP, AR, and reconciliation activities.
•       Provide guidance, feedback, and training to support professional growth and maintain accuracy in day-to-day accounting.
•       Oversee task prioritization and ensure adherence to reporting timelines.
•       Promote teamwork and continuous improvement within the accounting function.

Internal Controls & Process Improvement
•       Maintain and enhance internal controls, accounting policies, and standard operating procedures.
•       Recommend and help implement process improvements to increase efficiency and reporting accuracy.
•       Collaborate with the VP, Finance & Operations on accounting system enhancements, automation, and integration projects across multiple platforms, including NetSuite implementation, and migrations and integrations from QuickBooks, Sage etc.

Cash Flow & Treasury Support
•       Monitor daily cash balances and prepare periodic cash flow forecasts for review.
•       Manage payments, transfers, and intercompany reconciliations.
•       Review bank and credit card reconciliations, responding to escalated discrepancies as needed.
•       Support treasury functions related to foreign exchange, multi-currency transactions, and intercompany settlements.

Audit & Compliance
•       Internally coordinate annual audits and reviews, ensuring timely preparation and submission of all audit deliverables.
•       Manage audit timelines and liaise with auditors to resolve issues efficiently.
•       Prepare working papers, reconciliations, and supporting schedules for review.
•       Prepare and file periodic tax remittances (GST/HST, payroll deductions) and coordinate with external advisors as required.
•       Maintain comprehensive and organized financial records in compliance with IFRS and regulatory requirements.

Cross-Functional Support
•       Partner with internal departments to provide accurate financial data and analytical insights.
•       Assist the VP, Finance & Operations with financial analyses, management presentations, and other special projects.
•       Support financial planning, reporting, and operational decision-making processes.

Qualifications

Education & Experience
•       Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
•       CPA designation (or in advanced stages of completion) is strongly preferred.
•       8+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in a multi-entity environment.
•       Experience with IFRS reporting, multi-currency accounting, entity integrations, and conversion from cash or PE GAAP to IFRS/accrual basis.
•       Experience within a portfolio management, investment, or financial advisory firm is a strong asset.
•       Prior supervisory experience managing staff or accounting clerks is an asset.

Skills & Competencies
•       Strong technical accounting knowledge, with emphasis on IFRS, consolidations, and multi-currency operations.
•       Demonstrated ability to integrate new entities and manage accounting conversions.
•       Excellent ability to multitask and adapt to a changing, fast-paced environment.
•       Proficiency in multiple types of accounting software, including NetSuite, QuickBooks, and Sage.
•       Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
•       Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative and solution-oriented mindset.
•       Strong organizational and time-management abilities, with the capacity to meet multiple deadlines.
