Position Summary
We are seeking a highly experienced, entrepreneurial Senior Advisor / Tax Planning Lead to support the succession and expansion of our cross-border private client group. This individual will work directly with senior leadership to manage and grow a high-value client base, deliver integrated planning and tax services, and help lead the evolution of the firm’s cross-border wealth capabilities.
This role is ideal for a professional with deep Canadian, U.S., and Canada/U.S. Treaty tax expertise, exposure to U.S. client planning, and the ability to manage both ongoing client relationships and technical tax execution. As a key member of our team, the ideal candidate will have the credibility to take over existing client relationships and the drive to mentor and develop junior talent.
Key Responsibilities
Client Relationship Management
- Serve as the primary or co-primary advisor for a book of high-net-worth cross-border clients (developing your own book not required).
- Deliver comprehensive financial planning across investment, tax, retirement, and estate strategies.
- Build trust and long-term relationships through high-touch service, strategic insight, and proactive guidance.
Tax Strategy & Execution
- Lead Canadian tax filing process (T1, T1135, NR4, etc.) and provide cross-border tax planning expertise.
- Collaborate with U.S. partners and legal/tax counsel to coordinate dual-jurisdiction strategies.
- Interface with external providers or internal partners to ensure accurate and timely filings.
Business Leadership & Growth
- Support the gradual transition of the Managing Director’s client relationships over the next 1–3 years.
- Actively participate in onboarding new clients and supporting firm growth initiatives.
- Collaborate with firm leadership to shape strategy, resource planning, and firm integration across geographies.
Team Collaboration & Mentorship
- Serve as a mentor to junior planners and support staff; contribute to a culture of excellence and professional growth.
- Work closely with other departments (investments, operations, U.S. advisory teams) to deliver seamless client experience.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- CPA, CFP, or similar financial/tax designation required.
- Minimum 8–10 years of experience in tax planning, wealth advisory, or a related financial services field.
- Demonstrated experience working with high-net-worth individuals with cross-border (Canada-U.S.) needs.
- Experience managing complex client situations involving family enterprises, estate structures, or expatriate transitions.
Skills & Competencies
- Deep technical knowledge of Canadian personal and trust tax matters; working knowledge of U.S. tax concepts.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to build and retain client relationships.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and balance hands-on work with strategic thinking.
- Entrepreneurial spirit with desire to take ownership and contribute meaningfully to the firm's future.
