About Us: Caritas School of Life is dedicated to providing healing and support to individuals facing the challenges of addiction and mental health disorders. We offer a day and residential therapeutic community program where we guide our clients toward achieving safe, realistic goals by empowering them with the necessary tools to address their challenges.

Position Summary: As an Addictions Counsellor at Caritas School of Life, you will develop and facilitate group counselling, educational, and support services tailored to our clients' needs. You will play a critical role in helping clients find meaning and understanding in their lives, and contribute to their journey toward recovery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Therapeutic Community Engagement: Utilize the TC model principles to develop and facilitate dynamic group therapy sessions and psychoeducational content that addresses the specific needs and circumstances of our clients.
  • Individual Counselling: Conduct personalized counselling sessions with clients, helping them set and achieve realistic personal and recovery-related goals through structured therapeutic interactions.
  • Family Meetings and Collaboration: Organize and participate in family meetings, providing crucial feedback on client progress and actively involving family members in the recovery process.
  • Program Development and Facilitation: Continuously assess and evolve therapy group formats and content to ensure they meet the changing needs of clients. This includes creating materials, planning activities, and evaluating effectiveness.
  • Case Management and Reporting: Maintain rigorous documentation including case notes, progress reports, and data management to monitor and report on client development and program efficacy.
  • Crisis Management: Effectively handle crisis situations among clients, applying de-escalation techniques and emergency response strategies as necessary. Participate in an on-call rotation for after-hours emergencies.
  • Mentorship and Role Modeling: Serve as a mentor and role model to clients, demonstrating ethical behavior, integrity, and a commitment to personal and client growth.
  • Compliance and Safety: Ensure all activities comply with relevant legislation, policies, and health and safety standards. Educate and guide staff and clients on these standards.

Key Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced Group Facilitation: Strong capabilities in leading therapeutic groups, with extensive knowledge of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing.
  • Cultural Competence: Demonstrate sensitivity and adaptability to cultural, gender, racial, and socio-economic backgrounds of clients.
  • Professional Ethics and Boundaries: Uphold strict professional ethics with a clear understanding of boundaries and client confidentiality.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to forge strong relationships and effectively convey complex ideas.
  • Organizational and Administrative Proficiency: Skilled in managing multiple tasks with high attention to detail and the ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
  • Crisis Intervention: Competence in assessing risk and responding to client emergencies with calm and decisive action.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree/diploma in a science or health-related field.
  • Minimum two years’ experience in mental health and addiction services.
  • Proficiency in French is a strong asset.
  • Valid G Class Driver’s License and First Aid CPR training required.
  •  ASIST training an asset

Working Conditions:
  • 8-hour shifts; includes days/evenings, weekends and holidays.
