Description
About Canadian Babbitt Bearings Ltd.
CBB manufactures, repairs and refurbishes critical babbitt bearings and associated industrial products for the energy, marine and industrial sectors. Its work includes precision machining, casting, assembly and bearing refurbishment for equipment such as turbines, motors and generators. Quality inspection supports the dimensional accuracy, material traceability and reliability of these critical components.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Quality Manager, the Junior Quality Control Inspector performs incoming, in-process and final inspections of manufactured and repaired bearings, components and assemblies. The role is suited to someone with hands-on manufacturing inspection experience who can interpret engineering drawings, use manual measuring equipment and document results accurately.
The inspector is expected to carry out routine assigned inspections independently, determine conformity against documented requirements and communicate results to Production and Quality. The Quality Manager provides guidance on complex technical issues, customer-specific requirements and non-conformance dispositions. Product release and acceptance decisions remain subject to CBB’s established authorization procedures.
Responsibilities
· Perform visual and dimensional inspections on incoming materials, machined components, repaired bearings and assemblies against engineering drawings, specifications, customer requirements and CBB’s Quality Assurance System.
· Select and use appropriate manual measuring tools, including calipers, micrometers, gauges and indicators, to verify dimensions and tolerances. Confirm calibration status and suitability before use.
· Perform first-off inspections, operation validation, in-process checks and assigned final inspections. Complete First Article Inspections (FAI) within demonstrated competency, following control plans and Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs).
· Use the Romer arm, coordinate measuring machine (CMM) and 3D scanning equipment where trained and authorized. Execute established inspection routines and perform manual CMM measurements; develop or modify basic programs with technical review as required.
· Prepare accurate inspection reports, including incoming and final inspection records, and compile supporting documents for customer submission in accordance with review and approval requirements.
· Review material certificates and non-destructive testing (NDT) reports for completeness, identification and traceability against specified requirements. Maintain retrievable hard-copy and electronic records, and escalate technical discrepancies.
· Determine conformity against defined acceptance criteria, document non-conformances and coordinate required identification and segregation. Recommend next steps and refer concessions, repair decisions and final disposition to authorized personnel.
· Maintain calibration records, monitor due dates and coordinate assigned calibration activities. Report damaged, unsuitable or overdue measuring equipment.
· Participate in root cause analysis and corrective actions by collecting inspection evidence, identifying recurring issues and verifying assigned corrective-action results.
· Work with Production and Engineering to clarify inspection requirements, support new product introduction and communicate quality concerns promptly.
· Participate in continuous improvement, defect prevention and safe workplace practices. Support assigned audits by gathering records and assisting experienced auditors.
· Communicate inspection findings clearly with internal teams and support customer or supplier quality inquiries, involving the Quality Manager when technical approval or disposition is required.
Required Experience and Skills
· Minimum 1 year hands-on quality inspection experience in precision manufacturing, machining or assembly, including dimensional checks and inspection documentation.
· Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings in metric and imperial units, including close tolerances and GD&T.
· Proficiency selecting and using manual measuring tools, including micrometers, calipers, gauges and indicators, with awareness of calibration status and measurement repeatability.
· Practical exposure to ISO 9001:2015 quality systems, controlled procedures, drawing revision control, inspection records and non-conformance reporting.
· Working knowledge of incoming, first-off, in-process, First Article and final inspections using specifications, control plans and Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs).
· Understanding of material and component traceability, material certificates and NDT reports, including identifying missing or inconsistent documentation.
· Ability to identify and document non-conformances, apply defined acceptance criteria and support root cause analysis and corrective actions.
· Familiarity with bearing manufacture or repair, casting, babbitting, material characteristics, precision turning, five-axis machining or assembly is an asset.
· Experience with CMM inspection, Romer arm measurement, 3D scanning or PC-DMIS is an asset; advanced independent programming is not required.
· Working proficiency in Microsoft Office and Excel, with the ability to prepare clear technical reports, organize inspection work and communicate findings with Production, Engineering and Quality.
· Diploma, certificate or apprenticeship training in a mechanical, machining, manufacturing or quality-related discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience; quality or metrology certifications are assets.
· Exposure to nuclear quality standards such as N299.3 or Z299.3, as applicable, and Lean practices such as 5S, standard work and defect reduction is an asset.
- Ability to work rotating shifts (Days, Afternoons, Midnights) with availability for overtime. No weekends or holidays. Shift premiums apply.
